How to apply henna paste
(Wear any old top front open or loose neck)
Step 1: Prepare clean hair. Apply coconut oil or petroleum jelly on your forehead, neck, and ears to prevent staining. Wear gloves to protect your hands. Mix henna with hot water for a smooth consistency. Apply the thick paste evenly on your hair.
Step 2: Detangle hair. Divide into three sections: two in front, one in back. Start from back top, applying henna liberally. Gather each section into a bun. Move to front sections, working diagonally or horizontally. Add each front section to previous bun.
Step 3: Once you covered all the sections and made sure the entire hair is applied evenly, take a plastic shower cap or a cling wrap and cover your hair. This wrap will help henna to set and help in keeping the henna warm and moist.
Step 4: Leave it on for 3-5 hours. Minimum 3 hours required for the grey coverage. If it’s nice and sunny weather, let your head get some sunshine. Heat helps to speed up the process and darker color.
How to wash henna
To remove the henna, flip your hair over and pour some warm water over your hair and massage the henna off. Be gentle with the washing. Keep rinsing till you see clear water from the wash. You can use a conditioner, if your hair feels rough (especially when you have previously chemical treated hair). Rinse the hair with lukewarm or cold water.
Henna takes over 24 to 48 hours to develop properly. Initially, it appears orange or lighter, but don’t worry as the color will deepen later. Shampoo next day. It’s always best to use sulfate free shampoo.
POST-WASH: Oil your hair overnight & wash with shampoo the next day. It takes a day's time for henna to darken on hair, hence advisable to not use shampoo on the day of application.
Root Touch Up
Step 1: To touch up, part henna in three sections. Start from the bottom part of the back section. Then front sections.
Step 2: Only apply henna paste on the roots, new grey growth.
Step 3: Leave it on 3 hours minimum for the grey to get covered well.
If you want to use henna paste just for conditioning, leave it on for 1-2 hours only.
Never leave henna overnight. It can break your hair.
FOR BLACK HAIR SHADE: Apply natural Indigo paste day after applying henna. Wash off after 1-2 hours. Mixing indigo with Henna will not give a good shade. Always follow this 2-step process for black shade.
